Short Pile Romanov Sheepskins
Durable short pile, see images for sizes and color variations
Soft and durable short pile sheepskin. Unique and natural. Sheepskins are amazingly warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Place one on your bed and lay under it, or use it as a lap blanket. For soothing comfort under your feet. This was a living animal, these sheepskins are not meant for walking on with shoes or for your dog bed, no matter how special your dog. The sheep was more special to me. Just saying.
The Romanov Sheep is one of the world’s unimproved breeds. Each Romanov grows a distinct and charactered fleece, comprised of soft, fine gray to gray-brown wool with short black hair underneath. Contact us for additional photos.
Poe Run sheep are raised on the mountainside hills of our homestead. We make every effort for our animals to live good lives and that they are treated with respect. Each fleece is a treasure from a beautiful homestead animal.
Rams grow a black mane and dorsal stripe. Ewes have a more all over blend of gray and black, some with a fine black stripe down the back. Lambs are born black and begin to grow their gray wool after a month. The fine gray wool is generally not suited to being walked on and will wear and mat with contact. Instead use it decoratively, or put it on top of your bed coverings to improve quality and warmth of sleep. Some fleeces are shorn before processing, resulting in a shorter more durable fleece.
This breed is a lean, mid-size, double-coated animal. It originated in the Upper Volga Region of Russia and was later imported to France and Germany. It was imported to the US and Canada in the 1980s and is gaining in popularity among meat breeders and fiber enthusiasts. The sheep, even rams, are highly personable and alert. They are excellent foragers and do well in the West Virginia wilds.
